Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them: pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones diarrhea or stomach cramps (severe or continuing) numbness or tingling of the hands, legs, or feet redness, soreness, swelling, or bleeding of the gums sensation of motion, usually whirling, either of one's self or of one's surroundings sexual problems in men (continuing), including failure to experience a sexual orgasm sores in the mouth and on the lips Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. Many of my patients, colleagues, friends, and even neighbors have asked me about the new drug flibanserin (brand name Addyi). Just this past Tuesday, the FDA approved this drug for treatment of low sexual desire in women. Flibanserin has generated more questions, comments, and media inquiries for me than I’ve ever experienced in my 20-year career as an Ob/Gyn. While there are several medications that improve sexual function in men (including Viagra, the most famous one), flibanserin is the first drug ever approved by the FDA to improve sexual function in women. Here are what I consider the relevant facts and data about flibanserin, and the advice I give my patients.

  • Users should avoid heavy meals close to pill intake.
  • Sildenafil pink pill can sometimes cause a headache or flushing.
  • It may improve sexual confidence and reduce anxiety.
  • Store the pink pill out of reach of children.
  • Its effectiveness can be influenced by other health factors.
  • Regular health check-ups are recommended during use.

First of all, it’s not a “pink Viagra.” Viagra (sildenafil) treats erectile dysfunction in men by improving blood flow to the penis by inhibiting the enzyme nitric oxide synthase. In contrast, flibanserin is thought to work by increasing the release of the neurotransmitter hormones dopamine and norepinephrine, while decreasing serotonin release in the area of the brain that regulates sexuality. Viagra is taken just before having sex, while flibanserin needs to be taken daily. Flibanserin is only approved for pre-menopausal women. It has been shown to slightly improve sexual satisfaction in some women (some more than others).

8.2 Lactation

It is important that you tell all of your doctors that you take sildenafil. If you need emergency medical care for a heart problem, it is important that your doctor knows when you last took sildenafil. Do not use this medicine if you are also using a nitrate medicine, often used to treat angina or high blood pressure. Some illegal ("street") drugs called "poppers" (such as amyl nitrate, butyl nitrate, or nitrite). Do not use this medicine if you also use riociguat (Adempas®).

More common

If you will be taking this medicine for pulmonary arterial hypertension, your doctor will want to check your progress at regular visits. This will allow your doctor to see if the medicine is working properly and to decide if you should continue to take it. If you take sildenafil for pulmonary arterial hypertension, do not take Viagra®, Vibrique™ or other PDE5 inhibitors, including tadalafil (Cialis®) or vardenafil (Levitra®). If you take too much sildenafil or take it together with these medicines, the chance for side effects will be higher. It is important to tell your doctor about any heart problems you have now or may have had in the past. The potential side effects include low blood pressure, nausea, and fainting. Women should not drink alcohol or use birth control pills while taking it because they can worsen the side effects. Of course, some women may decide these requirements and side effects are just not worth it, since they can be pretty big drawbacks for a drug designed to improve the sex lives of premenopausal women. In my practice, women of all ages have questions and concerns about sex and sexuality. Most women seeing an Ob/Gyn do.

These questions often come up right after a woman has a baby, during perimenopause, and later in life as well. Women’s sexuality is very complex, and is affected by brain chemistry, mood, relationships, medications, and health status (of both partners).

As a physician, if a woman comes to me reporting concerns with sexuality, I start by assessing her physical and mental health (depression is a common cause of loss of interest in sex), and then check to see if she is on medications that can affect interest in sex.

Keep out of the reach of children. Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Ask your healthcare professional how you should dispose of any medicine you do not use. Store mixed oral liquid in the refrigerator. Throw away any unused mixed Revatio® oral liquid after 60 days. Common medication culprits are birth control pills, blood pressure pills, and antidepressants. If all of those seem to be okay, I then check on her stress level and her schedule. Often, I find that couples who are struggling with sexuality have not set aside any time and energy for their relationship. I ask, “If you and your partner were alone on a tropical island, and you had no worries or schedules, would you be interested in sex?” If the answer is yes, we work on strategies for prioritizing and carving out time for the relationship.
